Kalpitiya to Berlin

This summer, we at Kitesurfing Lanka were thrilled to support the next chapter of an inspiring exchange program between Kalpitiya and Berlin. What began as an initiative to raise awareness around sustainability, ocean wellness, and plastic waste prevention in our local community has now grown into a regular annual exchange—with students from Kalpitiya heading to Berlin in the summer and Berlin students visiting Kalpitiya in the fall. As proud partners, we hosted a five-day photography workshop in April 2025 led by the talented documentary photographer Parilojithan Ramanathan from the Goethe-Institut, where 18 students from six local schools explored the power of visual storytelling. Fourteen of them went on to exhibit their work at the Burning Donkey Festival, and the top seven were selected for a life-changing trip to Berlin! From June 28 to July 12, these students proudly represented Kalpitiya in the “Student Exchange Project Berlin – Kalpitiya 2025,” showcasing their photography alongside the Goethe-Institut and SBNE, and participating in workshops and site visits focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 12, 14, 15 & 17). Hosted by Berlin student families, the experience offered a deep cultural exchange and a chance to build friendships across borders. For us, these programs are about much more than travel—they’re about connection, empowerment, and opening up a world of possibilities for the next generation. We’re honored to be part of it and excited to continue shaping a more sustainable, globally connected future together.
