Our Story

From a shared dream to a living movement

Kitesurfing Lanka was born from a simple yet powerful moment: an email between two passionate kiters. Dil, Sri Lanka’s first IKO-certified instructor, had started a blog about local wind spots. Leo, a traveler and fellow kitesurfer, found the blog, reached out — and a friendship began.

That email turned into a kite trip. And that trip turned into a vision: to create a kite camp rooted in community, creativity, and purpose — something that didn’t yet exist in Sri Lanka.

Building it – by hand, with heart

In 2012, we started with almost nothing: a handful of tents, borrowed kites, a secondhand Land Rover, and more passion than money. We brought furniture from Colombo, built huts by hand, and cooked our first meals together with a group of friends. Dil’s mum even pawned her jewelry to help us buy our first food supplies. Early guests camped under the stars or stayed in tents inspired by Borderlands, a favorite place of ours. Slowly, the camp took shape — not from big investments, but from a growing family of travelers who believed in what we were building. Every room, tree, and painted wall was shaped by this community — and still is today.

Sustainability

A movement grows – from Kite Green to The Kommune Collective

What began as a kite school became much more. We trained local youth, supported families, planted mangroves, and created space for art, education, and connection. Over the years, KSL grew into a platform for regenerative tourism and social impact.

Today, that spirit continues through The Kommune Collective — our evolving initiative for environmental action, creative exchange, and meaningful travel.
