TRAVEL, BOOKING & PAYMENTS

The easiest and most comfortable way to reach us is by booking an airport pickup with our trusted local drivers. Just email your flight number and arrival time to info@kitesurfinglanka.com, and we’ll arrange everything.

Our AC minivans are ideal for travelers with kitesurf gear, offering space for up to 4 guests plus baggage. All our drivers are part of the Kalpitiya community and have been safely transporting guests to KSL for more than 15 years.

The drive from Colombo International Airport takes around 3–3.5 hours.

Yes — but we only recommend it if you’re traveling light and up for an adventure. Public buses and trains in Sri Lanka are affordable and run frequently, but they’re not ideal if you have kite gear or large bags.

  • 🚌 By Bus: You can take a bus from Colombo or Negombo to Puttalam or Kalpitiya. Most buses leave when full, so there’s no fixed schedule. Expect a tight squeeze and a standing ride during peak hours.

  • 🚆 By Train: Trains from Colombo to Puttalam are more comfortable but limited in schedule. From Puttalam, take a bus or tuk-tuk to Kalpitiya.

  • 🛺 Last Mile: Whether you arrive in Kalpitiya town or Kurinchanpitiya, you’ll need a tuk-tuk for the final stretch to the camp.

If you’re carrying kitesurfing equipment, we strongly recommend booking our private airport pickup instead.

Absolutely. We can arrange private transport from anywhere in Sri Lanka — just email us at info@kitesurfinglanka.com or call our office at +94 773686235 or +94 76 6839462 to sort out the details.

If you prefer to travel independently:

  • 🚆 Train to Puttalam is your best option. It’s more comfortable than the bus and offers beautiful views along the way. From Puttalam, take a tuk-tuk or local bus toward Kalpitiya and follow the directions mentioned above.

  • 🚌 Buses run between most cities and Puttalam or Kalpitiya, but they can be crowded and unpredictable — not ideal with luggage or kite gear.

We’re happy to help coordinate the final leg of your journey if needed.

Yes — to secure your stay at Kitesurfing Lanka, we require a €100 deposit per person. This helps us confirm your room and/or kite course and prepare everything for your arrival.

For genuine reasons, we aim to be as flexible as we can and usually offer a full refund of your deposit. However, we kindly ask for early communication to help us manage bookings and staff planning.

LESSONS, GEAR & SPOT INFO

Absolutely! At Kitesurfing Lanka, we offer professional lessons in three disciplines — kitesurfing &  foiling and wing foiling — for all skill levels.

Our team of IKO-certified instructors will help you progress safely and confidently, whether you’re starting from scratch or improving advanced techniques.

Lessons are available as private sessions or group packages, and can be pre-booked online (recommended) or arranged on-site (subject to availability).

A typical kite day includes up to 5 hours of water time, usually split into 3 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, depending on wind and student stamina.

You can book individual hours or go for a multi-day lesson package — tailored to your goals and learning pace.

Most complete beginners need 9 to 15 hours to confidently get on the board and start riding. If you’re progressing to Kite Foiling, our instructors will guide you through the transition with dedicated sessions.

💡 All our coaches are IKO-certified and experienced in adapting to your level — from first water starts to advanced foil control.

Wing foiling is different from traditional kitesurfing, and we structure our wing lessons accordingly. Most sessions run for 2–3 hours, depending on conditions and your fitness level.

You can book a wing intro, multi-day progression, or combine wing with foil sessions if you’re coming from another board sport.

It typically takes 6 to 10 hours for most beginners to get their first wing rides. The learning curve is fast and fun — especially with Kalpitiya’s steady wind and flat water.

🚀 Whether you’re completely new or crossing over from kitesurfing or windsurfing, our team will help you get winging confidently.

Absolutely! If you’re an independent kitesurfer, kite foiler, or wing foiler looking to level up, we offer advanced coaching tailored to your goals.

You’ll discuss your riding goals directly with one of our senior coaches, who’ll structure sessions to unlock your next breakthrough.

🟡 Summer Season (Mid-May to Mid-October):
Steady all-day wind with averages of 18–22 knots. Ride both the butter-flat lagoon and the ocean waves. Warm weather — no wetsuit needed.

🔵 Winter Season (Mid-December to Mid-March):
Winds pick up in the afternoon, ranging from 15–20 knots. You’ll kite right in front of the resort on perfect flat water. Mornings are ideal for whale and dolphin watching, snorkeling, and diving. Water is warm year-round — a shortie or no wetsuit is fine.

🟢 Shoulder Months (April, October, November):
Low wind, but still beautiful. These months are great for yoga retreats, lagoon kayaking, eco-tours, or fitness bootcamps.
Foilers can often score light wind sessions thanks to the constant breeze and smooth water.

Absolutely — Kalpitiya is one of the best flat-water kite spots in Asia.

  • Winter Season (Dec–Mar): Ride directly in front of your bungalow in our butter-flat home spot, just steps from the camp.

  • Summer Season (May–Oct): We kite at the main Kalpitiya Lagoon, just a 10-minute ride away (daily transport included).
We also run weekly kite trips to remote flat-water lagoons around the peninsula — expect mirror-flat water and zero crowds.

Whether you’re progressing your first rides or training freestyle tricks, KSL has the flat water you’re looking for.

Absolutely! Kalpitiya isn’t just about flat water — we’ve got waves too, especially in the Summer Season (May–Oct).

  • Donkey Point: Just up the beach from camp, this side-onshore spot is ideal for fun, manageable wave riding. Daily transport included.

  • Ocean Side of the Lagoon: Mix it up with small to mid-sized shore breaks — perfect for playful carving.

  • Salli Reef: An offshore reef break for experienced riders. When swell and direction line up, this epic wave spot comes alive.
Launch directly from our beach and kite out — just make sure you go with a buddy or guide for safety.

Also great for wing foilers looking for swell and rolling waves — Donkey Point delivers in Summer!

No worries — Kalpitiya is a kite adventure playground!
If you’re someone who craves variety, you’re in the right place.

We regularly organize downwinders, island escapes, and lagoon missions across Kalpitiya’s vast kiteable terrain — including sandbanks, islets, reef zones, and secret flatwater spots. You can explore a new location nearly every day of the week!

  • Weekly scheduled trips during the season

  • Custom adventures available on request

  • Transport and rescue boat support included

From butter flat lagoons to scenic island downwinders — we keep it fresh.

Absolutely — Kalpitiya is made for downwinders!
Most of our kite trips include downwind rides along pristine sandbanks, islets, and lagoons — always with boat support and local guidance.

Choosing the right kite size for Kalpitiya’s wind depends on the season and your riding style:

  • Summer Season (May–October) – steady 18–22 knots:
Most riders use 7m–10m kites depending on weight and ability. Wave riders often prefer smaller sizes with good depower.

  • Winter Season (December–March) – consistent 15–20 knots:
A 9m–12m kite is common for freeride in the flat lagoon. Beginners may prefer slightly larger sizes for easier power delivery.

  • Low Wind Months (April, Oct–Nov) – lighter breezes:
Large kites like 12m–15m (or bigger) are ideal, especially for kite foiling or lighter riders.

📍 If you’re unsure, our team can help you select the right sizes when you arrive — or reserve your rental gear in advance to match expected winds.

Yes — all safety gear is included with your lessons at KSL:

  • Helmets

  • Impact vests

  • Harnesses

Your instructor will outfit you with the appropriate gear based on your skill level and wind conditions.

🛡️ Safety is our priority — we ensure all equipment meets current standards and is regularly inspected.

SAFETY, HEALTH & ESSENTIALS

No vaccinations are required by law to enter Sri Lanka. However, we recommend you check with your doctor or travel clinic for the latest advice on recommended vaccines before traveling.

Kalpitiya is located in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, meaning mosquito activity is generally low — especially during the main kite seasons. We regularly fumigate the camp, and all rooms are equipped with mosquito nets.

However, mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue can still occur across Sri Lanka.

We strongly recommend bringing a mosquito repellent spray with you, especially if you plan to travel outside Kalpitiya or during the shoulder months.

⚠️ Important: Rabies Risk
There are stray dogs in the village. While most are peaceful, we strongly advise against feeding or petting them. Our two camp dogs Shadow and Aunty are both vaccinated. Rabies is rare but always fatal if untreated.
Post-exposure treatment (PEP) is costly and only available in major hospitals, the closest being Nawaloka Hospital in Negombo — a 3.5-hour drive away.
If scratched or bitten, seek medical help immediately.

✅ For extra safety, consult your doctor about preventive vaccinations before traveling.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before arrival.

Medical care in Sri Lanka is reliable. The nearest facility is the Kalpitiya Base Hospital (~30 min). For more serious conditions, patients are transferred to Puttalam (~45 min) or, if needed, Nawaloka Private Hospital in Negombo (~3.5 hrs).

We keep a spinal board and basic first aid on site to assist with minor injuries.

Yes — power interruptions do happen. That’s why we run a backup generator to ensure uninterrupted electricity across the camp, including lights, charging stations, and shared spaces.

For reliable 4G coverage and good data packages, we recommend Dialog SIM cards. They’re affordable and work well throughout Kalpitiya and across Sri Lanka.
