Learning to Wing Foil in Kalpitiya with Mischi

There are easier ways to spend an afternoon than standing on a large board, holding a wing above your head and trying to work out what your feet, hands and the wind are doing at the same time. This is usually where Mischi comes in.

Originally from Switzerland, Mischi has been part of Sri Lanka’s watersports scene since long before wing foiling arrived in Kalpitiya. He was already involved in the local kite scene in the mid-2000s and even taught KSL co-founder Dil to kitesurf. Today, he is one of the familiar faces around Kitesurfing Lanka and our lead instructor for wing foiling. He has watched the equipment change, the kite scene grow and, more recently, wings and foil boards appear on the lagoon.

Can complete beginners learn to wing foil?

Absolutely. You do not need to know how to kitesurf, windsurf or foil before starting. A beginner lesson starts with the basics: learning how to handle the wing and understand the wind before adding the board. From there, the focus moves to balance, direction and controlling the wing while moving across the water. The foil comes later, once those pieces start working together. Some students arrive with years of board-sport experience. Others have never stood on anything more unstable than a paddleboard. Lessons are adapted accordingly, with equipment selected for the rider’s size and level. Progress is rarely linear. One run works, the next does not. Sometimes a small change in hand or foot position is enough to make something suddenly click. That is where an experienced instructor makes a difference.

Learning in your own language

Mischi teaches in German, French and English.

On land, that may sound like a small convenience. On the water, when you are simultaneously thinking about your feet, the wing and the wind, a clear instruction in a familiar language can make things considerably easier. The wider KSL instructor team is multilingual too. Across our watersports school, lessons are offered in languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Sinhalese, depending on instructor availability. For wing foil lessons, we prefer to match students with an instructor who can communicate clearly with them rather than promise that every language will always be available. It matters for safety, but also for the small corrections that are such an important part of learning a new sport.

Why learn wing foiling in Kalpitiya?

The lagoon directly in front of KSL gives wing foilers access to protected water without travelling to another spot. For beginners, flat water makes it easier to concentrate on one new skill at a time. Kalpitiya also has two wind seasons. Summer generally brings stronger south-westerly winds, while winter tends to bring lighter winds that often build later in the day. The water remains warm throughout both seasons. For someone learning, the important part is having enough space and suitable conditions to repeat the same movements until they start to feel familiar.

From kite pioneer to wing foil instructor

Mischi’s connection with Kalpitiya predates KSL itself. Dil learned to kitesurf from him in the early days, when very few people were kiting here. Wing foiling is simply the latest chapter. The equipment has changed, but the work of teaching remains surprisingly similar: watch what the rider is doing, identify what needs to change and explain it in a way that makes sense to that person. Sometimes that happens in English. Sometimes in French. Sometimes in Swiss-accented German. Then it is back onto the board to try again.
