Two ways to get above the water

You don’t need a kite or wing to experience your first flight on a foil. At KSL, you can learn to hydrofoil behind a boat or step onto an eFoil powered by its own electric motor.
Both take place directly in the small lagoon in front of KSL in Kandakuliya. With the boat providing the pull or the eFoil providing its own power, you can concentrate on the part that makes foiling so different: the moment the board lifts away from the surface and starts gliding above the water.
If you want to try eFoiling or hydrofoiling in Sri Lanka, you don’t need previous foiling experience to get started. Come to try something completely new, add a foil session to a calm day in Kalpitiya, or use it to develop skills for wing foiling or kite foiling.

Hydrofoiling Behind the Boat

... ...

Hydrofoiling behind a boat is one of the simplest ways to discover what riding a foil actually feels like. The boat provides a steady pull, leaving you free to concentrate on your stance, balance and the movements that control the foil.

Your first attempts start with the board on the surface. As you become more comfortable, you gradually introduce lift and learn how small changes in your weight affect the foil. Then comes the interesting part: the board rises, the resistance underneath you drops and suddenly you are riding above the water rather than through it.

At KSL, boat foil sessions take place directly in the small lagoon in front of camp. You don’t need previous foiling experience to start. It works as a first foil experience in its own right, while kiters and wing foilers can also use the session to work specifically on foil control before adding a kite or wing into the equation.

E-Foiling in Kalpitiya

... ...

An eFoil combines a hydrofoil board with an electric motor underneath the water. You control your speed with a handheld remote and steer by shifting your weight. There is no kite to fly, no wing to hold and no wave needed to get you moving.

Your first attempts usually start with the board on the water while you get used to the remote, steering and balance. As you become more comfortable, you gradually introduce the foil. When it lifts for the first time, the board leaves the surface and the feeling changes completely: less resistance, less noise from the water and a smooth ride across the lagoon.

Because an eFoil has its own propulsion, you don’t need wind to ride. That makes eFoiling a good activity for calm mornings and no-wind days in Kalpitiya, but you certainly don’t need to be a kitesurfer waiting for the wind. Complete beginners can try it simply because they want to experience what it feels like to ride above the water.

E-Foil sessions take place directly in the small KSL lagoon in front of camp. Experienced kiters, wakeboarders and wing foilers are welcome too, whether they want to try something different or spend some focused time on foil control.

From camp to foil in a few steps

Both activities take place in the lagoon directly in front of KSL.

E-Foil or Hydrofoil Behind the Boat: What’s the Difference?

Both activities use the same basic principle. A hydrofoil underneath the board creates lift as you gain speed, eventually raising the board above the surface. The main difference is where that speed comes from.

Behind the boat, the boat provides the pull. On an eFoil, an electric motor attached to the foil provides the propulsion and you control the speed yourself with a handheld remote.

Wind needed Non Non
Previous foiling experience Not needed for a lesson Not needed for a lesson

How you ride Control your own speed Boat provides steady pull

If you simply want to find out what foiling feels like, either is a good place to start. E-Foiling gives you control over your own speed, while boat foiling provides a steady pull so you can concentrate on the board and foil.

If your eventual goal is wing foiling or kite foiling, both can also help you become familiar with the foil before adding wind and another piece of equipment to think about.

Foiling at KSL

Both eFoil and boat foil sessions take place in the small lagoon directly in front of KSL in Kandakuliya. You can walk from camp to the water rather than travelling to another teaching spot, making it easy to fit a session into your day.

Foiling is sensitive to surprisingly small changes in body position. A little more weight towards the back can make the foil rise; shifting forward brings the board back towards the water. During a lesson, the instructor can focus on your stance, balance and foil control while you get used to a board that behaves very differently once it leaves the surface.

Previous foiling experience isn’t necessary for a beginner session. If you already have experience with kitesurfing, wing foiling, wakeboarding or another board sport, let the team know when booking so the session can take that into account.

... ...

No Wind? No Problem.

E-Foiling doesn’t depend on Kalpitiya’s kite seasons because the board provides its own propulsion. You don’t need wind or waves to get moving, making calm mornings and no-wind days particularly well suited to a session.

Boat foiling also provides its own source of power, so you don’t need kite or wing conditions to try hydrofoiling behind the boat. As with any activity on the water, sessions depend on suitable conditions in the lagoon.

E-Foiling & Hydrofoiling Q&A

E-Foiling is riding a hydrofoil board powered by an electric motor. You control the speed with a handheld remote and use your body position to steer and control the height of the foil. Once the foil generates enough lift, the board rises above the surface of the water.

Yes. You don’t need previous eFoil, kitesurfing or wing foiling experience to start with a lesson at KSL. Your first attempts focus on controlling the board, speed and balance before gradually introducing more lift.

No. The electric motor provides the propulsion, so an eFoil does not rely on wind or waves. This makes it a good watersports option for calm days in Kalpitiya.

Instead of using an electric motor, kite or wing for power, you are pulled behind a boat. The steady pull provides the speed required for the foil to generate lift while you concentrate on balance and controlling the board.

Both use a hydrofoil underneath the board, but the source of power is different. An eFoil uses an electric motor controlled by a handheld remote. A wing foiler uses a handheld wing and the wind for power, so learning to wing foil also involves learning to handle the wing and understand the wind.

Both take place in the small lagoon directly in front of Kitesurfing Lanka in Kandakuliya, Kalpitiya. There is no transfer to another teaching spot required for the session.

Yes. The equipment required for your eFoil or hydrofoil lesson is included in the lesson price.

Yes. E-Foil and hydrofoil rental options are available. Current durations and prices are listed above.
