Looking Beyond Kitesurfing: The Evolution of KSL as a Destination Experience
As our 15th — or perhaps 16th — year begins, all of us at Kitesurfing Lanka Camp & Nature Resort (KSL) are incredibly excited about what lies ahead for the 2026 Summer Kite Season.
This year already began with an inspiring trip to the ITB Berlin where Leo and I – Dilsiri Welikala – had the opportunity to meet tourism professionals from around the world, exchange ideas and reflect deeply on the future of travel and tourism in Sri Lanka.
One of our biggest realizations during the trip was understanding just how valuable Destination Management Companies and travel partners truly are. Ironically, we had to travel all the way to Berlin to fully appreciate the importance of building stronger relationships with local DMCs and international travel agents working with Sri Lanka.
But perhaps that is also part of our story.

When I was studying for my degree many years ago, I learnt about the concept of the “Learning Organization” — businesses that survive and grow by continuously adapting, listening and evolving. Back then, the world felt far less uncertain than it does today, but the lesson remained powerful.
Over the years, at KSL, we have tried to build exactly that kind of organization. We have listened to our guests, our environment, our local community, and the changing realities of tourism. We have adapted constantly, often learning while doing. Even this new realization about the importance of stronger tourism partnerships reflects that journey. It may have taken us 15 years to fully understand certain aspects of the global travel ecosystem, but we are never afraid to acknowledge our gaps, evolve and keep learning.

As we move into 2026, we are excited not only about kitesurfing and wingfoiling, but about the continued evolution of KSL as a destination experience.
KSL has always been more than just a watersports center. We are fortunate to be based in Kalpitiya — an all-year-round destination blessed with extraordinary nature, wildlife, lagoons, ocean energy and an incredible local community. This season, we are expanding our focus on retreats, wellness, and regenerative tourism experiences through Kommune and our upgraded Yoga & Wellness spaces. We are actively looking to collaborate with retreat organizers, wellness facilitators, travel designers and destination marketing partners who share similar values around meaningful travel, sustainability and authentic community experiences.
We are also proud to welcome Gau, our first professional Activity Center Manager, whose background in scuba diving, wellness and hospitality aligns beautifully with the ethos we continue to build at KSL.
The tourism world continues to evolve rapidly, and like everyone in the industry, we continue to navigate uncertain and changing times. But one thing these past years have taught us is resilience — the ability to adapt, improve, and continue forward with positivity and a smile.
For travel agents, DMCs, retreat organizers, and tourism partners looking to create unique Sri Lankan experiences, we would love to start conversations and explore possibilities together.
And for travelers simply looking for wind, nature, wellness, community, and a slower rhythm of life — do think about spending a holiday in our little piece of paradise.
