Sailing the Wind: Regenerative Tourism in Kalpitiya I Podcast imno.Expert
What does it take to turn a passion for the ocean into a movement that shapes an entire regional ecosystem?
Recently, our co-founder Dilsiri Welikala joined the imno.expert podcast (Episode #51) to discuss his 15-year journey of founding Kitesurfing Lanka (KSL), leaving a corporate career behind, and establishing a benchmark for regenerative tourism in Sri Lanka.
From Corporate Structures to a Kalpitiya Eco Resort
Fifteen years ago, the Kalpitiya peninsula was just a quiet strip of land virtually untouched by tourism. When Dilsiri left his corporate career to move to the northwest coast, he brought a specific question with him: Could a travel business actually improve the social and environmental fabric of its host community? From day one, building Kitesurfing Lanka became a real-time experiment in conscious entrepreneurship, looking far beyond the setup of a standard watersport camp.
Why Sustainable Travel in Sri Lanka Needs an Upgrade
In the podcast, Dilsiri discusses a crucial shift in modern hospitality: the move from sustainable à regenerative travel.
“Sustainability focuses on minimizing damage—doing less harm. Regenerative tourism, however, asks how we can actively leave a place better than we found it.”
For anyone looking for a truly sustainable holiday in Sri Lanka, this philosophy must manifest in tangible, everyday actions. At KSL, we break this down into three core pillars:
- Community-First Economics: Operating under strict fair-trade criteria, ensuring our regional staff and local boatmen are key stakeholders in our financial success.
- Hands-on Environmental Action: Running a property entirely free of single-use plastic bottles, running regular beach cleanups, and hosting local plastic upcycling workshops.
- Social Impact: Creating long-standing collaborations with regional village schools and supporting local animal welfare programs.
Merging Eco-Hospitality, Art, and Purpose
A unique aspect of the Kitesurfing Lanka story is the integration of creative practice. Over the years, Dilsiri has used art installations and environmental storytelling directly on-site in Kalpitiya. By using creative exhibitions to highlight ecological themes, we provide our guests with an immersive experience that challenges them to reflect on their own footprint.
As we look toward the future—expanding our focus into low-wind lifestyle innovations like Wing-Foiling and growing our dual-shala yoga and wellness sanctuary—our core mission remains unshakeable: connecting people, place, and purpose.
