Sustainability and The Kite Green Initiative

At Kitesurfing Lanka you have the chance to consciously and sustainably experience Sri Lanka’s natural beauty whilst having the adventure of a lifetime!

As a pioneer in ecologically aware tourism in this region, Kitesurfing Lanka prides itself on our conservation credentials, aiming to establish a more environmentally aware travel industry in Sri Lanka. Through collaborating with like-minded organisations, we are actively trying to reduce our carbon footprint and aim to become a zero-waste facility. In line with our focus on maximising the preservation of our planet, we invite you to join on our quest for a greener and more sustainable Sri Lanka!

What can you do for a greener & cleaner Sri Lanka?

  1. Guests are invited to offset their carbon footprint by assisting in our environment rehabilitation and Mangrove planting projects. Help us plant a mangrove or join in on a regular community beach clean-up.
  2. Organic and environmentally friendly bathing products are available to purchase in our shop.
  3. Join our regular workshops on how you can live a more environmentally conscious life – topics range from creating homemade bathing products to waste reduction activities.
  4. Donate to our Kite Green Initiative

What is the Kite Green Initiative?

Kite Green Initiative is the umbrella brand for all our environmental efforts.

Our main focus is the Mangrove planting project. Mangrove plants are located at the interface of land and sea and are often overlooked, but insanely important for the ecosystem because they:

  • create a natural barrier that protects the land from natural hazards
  • prevent erosion
  • provide a protected nursery space for marine life
  • mangroves also help to isolate carbon and thus mitigate the effects of climate change.

Mangroves are disappearing 3-5 times faster than overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. This is why the protection of mangrove ecosystems is essential today.

The other areas where the Kite Green Initiative is active include waste management and recycling facilities for the camp and community (sadly enough the government does not offer an effective waste collection system in our area), and educational programs for the community and stakeholders.

How do the donations work?

If you’d like to help us create a greener, healthier and cleaner Sri Lanka, please consider making a voluntary donation to our Kite Green Initiative. At the end of the month, we will add $1 for every $10 of donations received. The donations help us co-finance the Mangrove seedlings, help with waste management and recycling facility costs, and co-finance educational programs.

And how do we support your quest for an environmentally sustainable adventure in Sri Lanka?

A green camp

Close to the beach and surrounded by greenery and jungle, guests can expect to rest well in our vibrant island escape. Featuring endless examples of upcycling and repurposed driftwood, the design of our camp is in harmony with nature, blending and co-existing with the island’s native environment. Utilising numerous forms of energy conservation, an abundance of plants naturally cools the camp whilst the buildings are designed to maximise airflow, reducing our need for air conditioning.

Reforestation and waste management

The sustainability efforts at Kitesurfing Lanka are focused on reforestation initiatives and on reducing waste – firstly inside KSL as well as within the community. We also run our own waste management facility and work with Merijaan to help upcycle the washed-up plastic.

We actively reduced the introduction and consumption of single-use plastic across our facilities. From simple steps like serving your fresh coconut with a metal straw rather than using plastic, to a comprehensive waste management program, we’re becoming equipped waste warriors and would love for you to join us on our journey!

Supporting the community

Our ethos also includes making a difference, we have been able to positively change a sleepy little fishing village and create a new industry in Sri Lanka. We take great pride in employing and supporting the local community. We made a conscious decision outsource services to the village, so they can earn a living through the tourism industry too. To this day, KSL does not own a truck, van or boat – all these are provided by the village. We prioritise staff knowledge and conduct regular training on up-to-date environmental practices.

We recognise that tourism leaves behind a carbon footprint – and our goal is to reduce this footprint as much as possible.

When you chose a camp like ours, you not only chose to have an adventure of a lifetime in an environment that captures the raw beauty and authentic spirit of Sri Lanka, you also chose to preserve the islands natural environment, culture and heritage
